DNA testing is a fast developing and much misunderstood field. DNA is the genetic building material of life. A person’s DNA can be analyzed and tested for all sorts of things, from genetic disorders to ancestry and blood relationships.

DNA testing has advanced in recent years, and is now just about completely accurate (in most cases, 99.9% accurate to be exact), painless, simple, fast, and uncomplicated. No blood sample is necessarily needed, and in some cases it can even be done without the knowledge (or even physical presence) of the one being tested!

DNA tests can even be carried out in the privacy of your own home, with total and complete confidentiality. Testing kits can be ordered over the internet, which are then sent in to a DNA testing center, and results are received shortly afterward (how quickly results are received depends on the testing center and method).

Among the more popular DNA tests available are DNA Paternity tests, grandparent tests, sibling tests, and even aunt and uncle tests. DNA testing can also be used to determine a person’s ethnic background, such as whether a person has any African American, Native American, or Eurasian ancestors, as well as a variety of other ethnicities. For more information, see our article on DNA ancestry testing.

DNA paternity tests can be administered in one of two ways—there is what is known as private DNA testing, which is mostly for people who just want to know just who the father really is, and there are legal paternity tests, which can be used as evidence of paternity in a court of law. Legal tests are more expensive and more complicated, see our article on legal DNA testing for more information.

Paternity can also be determined by more distant relatives—meaning that if the alleged father is not around, one can test his brother to see if he is the child’s uncle, or the alleged father’s parents can be tested to see if they are the child’s grandparents. These tests are usually less accurate, though.

There are even DNA tests available for dogs to determine the exact breeding, i.e. if a dog is a purebred or mutt, and which breed or breeds it is descended from. Read more on this topic in our article on Dog DNA testing.

DNA testing is also used to determine whether twins are identical or not. Now, you may be wondering “that’s silly, just give a look at ‘em!” but it’s actually not so simple. Besides being a really interesting fact to know, there are also medical implications as to whether a twin is a true identical twin or just a really similar looking fraternal twin. Read more about this topic in our article on twin DNA testing.
